Local Produce Tastes Sweeter!
Though supporting local farmers seems an obvious choice, the benefits to our world and our community are actually even greater than most people realize. It's like a giant domino effect:
- buying local organics keeps money within our communities
- organic farms are sustained, and conventional farmers are motivated to convert their farms to organics (as our good friends at Norfolk and Nightengale did this year -- Bravo!)
- pollution is reduced by as much as 3000%, as there's no need for food to travel thousands of miles to reach the table
- more farms and less trucks balance each other out. It is a smooth transition between the way we used to do things and the way we do things now.
Still need more reasons to spring for local?
- Ontario produce is amazing! We grow some of the finest greens, apples, berries, cucumbers, tree-fruit, potatoes, tomatoes, melons, peppers, fresh spices, and squash in the whole world.
- When fruit doesn't travel, it usually tastes better, as it can be picked far closer to ripeness, and stays on the plant much longer.
